The 1st of March, 2021 almost feels like a couple of days ago when the Percy Hobart Fellowship team at PUBLIC, welcomed to the programme 46 service personnel comprising 23 Fellows each from the RAF and the Royal Navy cohorts (with 3 members of this cohort being from the US Navy).
Fast forward to today, the Fellows are now in week 7 and into the second half of the programme. Fellows have said the programme so far has been really exciting, fast-paced and loaded with information and learning.
A number of aspects make this programme different from others, namely the lectures, mentorship/coaching, start-up placement and innovation project. The lectures follow a mini-MBA syllabus and so far Fellows have covered topics like Product design & Design Thinking, Business Fundamentals & Finance as well as Technology Fundamentals and the defence landscape.
The mentorship and coaching sessions which the Fellows have weekly give them the opportunity to have 1-2-1 sessions with industry leaders and performance coaches who help them synthesise their learnings and other aspects of the course to develop disruptive solutions and become champions of innovation on return to service.
Startup placements offer the Fellows hands-on experience working with state of the art tech and systems used in enterprise and innovation as they spend 2-3 days a week working in an innovative startup carefully chosen for them by the Fellowship team.
Finally, the innovation project tasks the Fellows to develop an innovative solution to an operational problem in defence which they have identified. This gives them the opportunity to consolidate and apply their learnings during the course. So far, as part of their innovation, all the Fellows have all come up with really interesting problem statements and are currently working on solutions statements which they would develop and eventually pitch to key stakeholders in Defence at the end of the programme.
To sum up, there is a lot to be excited about the programme and the Fellows are fully engaged and doing a good job of taking advantage of not only the course content and resources that the programme provides, but also the amazing environment of innovation and networking opportunities that the programme affords. One can confidently say that the prospect of a truly innovative armed forces and a defence sector with a culture of innovation that can rival the commercial sector is bright indeed because in no time these Fellows would be returning to the service fully equipped on a mission to drive innovation across defence.
